Situated about 3+ hours from Cape Town, a visit to Cederberg Oasis needs to be a week-end outing!
For R120 per campsite per night (2012), its an easily affordable camping trip, offering much to see and do from an educational point of view.
If you aren’t fully equipped for camping, they also offer bed & breakfast accommodation, tents to hire and phenomenal meals in their restaurant. Prices and portion sizes will delight you and Chantal, your hostess is a fantastic chef!
On this visit, we spent three hot midsummer days there, mostly relaxing and ‘chilling’ by the poolside. In cooler seasons, the weather is more favourable for hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities
However, despite the heat, we bought a permit (a Wild Card would save you this cost) to visit the Stadsaal Caves and Elephant Rock Art, which is a very accessible and easily-viewed San rock painting, featuring a group of elephants and men.
Since my younger children will be learning about the San and about mountain formations, when they study South Africa, in the new year, it was an appropriate homeschool field trip!
The impressive Stadsaal Caves are a huge conglomeration of wind and weathered sandstone rock!
There are also numerous fascinating rock formations in the area offering plenty of subject matter for photography enthusiasts.
For those who enjoy geocaching, (see http://www.geocaching.com), there are a number of caches to find in the area too, as well as en route to the Cederberg!
Other activities on offer in the area are 4×4 trails, rock climbing, off-road motor biking and fishing in the rivers.
